We’ve been talking a lot about Forest Gump (the movie and the title character- why wasn’t he an NFL Draft pick again) on the show lately.
One interesting personal take on the soundtrack, which is one of the best in movie history, is the use of the song Against the Wind by Bob Seger. It’s used during the scene where Forest, crestfallen over Jenny’s sudden departure from Greenbo, Ala., decides to take off running across the country. It turned into a movement against the backdrop of that song.
Perhaps it was because I always sort of related the tune to the scene in the movie, but for whatever reason I always “felt” Hollywood Nights or Roll Me Away or even a tune like Fire Lake more than Against the Wind when it came to Seger tunes. I could say the same thing about Like a Rock because of its use in the Chevy commercial for all those years. One day about a year ago, though, I actually read the lyrics to Against the Wind, blocked the Gump scene from my mind and the song has a much deeper, more meaningful meaning.
I am at one of those points in life where Act 2 of my career and existence on this rock is really starting to crank up. The challenges that come with that are never easy, but oh so sweet. So this song has way, way more meaning to me personally than it once did when I basically sort of remember Forest stepping in a pile of poo and inadvertently creating one of the more popular pop culture memes back when memes were essentially T-shirt ideas.
